Match Night news:

The Young Ones win the Metals Academy Summer 2005 five a side Tournament

13 Jun 2005

Saturday 11th June saw 12 company teams of apprentices from the Metals Industry battle it out in the inaugural Metals Academy One Day 5 a side football tournament, which was run by the Metals Academy in partnership with Match Night. For full results and pictures from the tournament click on this story.

Tournament Background

The tournament was specially designed for apprentices within the metal industry.  The tournament offered apprentices the chance to meet and compete against apprentices from companies in the two main heartlands of the metals industry (Sheffield and West Midlands). It also marks the start of a new apprentice network, supported by the Metals Academy, that will offer apprentices a range of both educational and social activities.

It was a fantastic day and we would like to extend our thanks to all the teams that took part. Hopefully all teams enjoyed the competition and will enter again in next years' tournament.

J B & S Lees’ Operations Manager, Terry McMahon, was amongst the spectators, to support his company’s team.  He commented:

“It was very pleasing to see, after more than a decade of absence, an opportunity to bring together the youth of the metals industry in a well organised sports tournament.  I believe that this type of activity helps to develop a competitive spirit in young people, which is essential for both personal and business success!”

The Winners

The final of the main tournament saw The Young Ones from J B & S Lees in the West Midlands go up against OutoKumpu F.C from OutoKumpu in Sheffield. Both teams had put on fantastic performances in the group stages, quarter finals and semi finals and well deserved their place in the final. In a twist, both teams had already played each other in the group stages and with that match ending in a draw, everthing was set up for a great final. The crowd weren't disappointed - as at full time the match was locked in a 2-2 draw. There had to be a winner however, and it was the Young Ones who held their nerve to snatch victory in extra time with a golden goal!

The Young Ones on their way to victory in the final

Congratulations to the Young Ones on a fantastic tournament and commiserations to OutoKumpu, who were the unlucky runners up. We are sure both teams will be back next year to challenge for the 2006 title!

The golden boot winner in the main competition was won by Liam Pinder from One Village Short Of A Dingle Utd - a team from Street Force and Billington Structures. His team went out at the semi final stage to the eventual winners but he ended the tournament with a fantastic total of 15 goals in just four matches.

The Plate Winners

The plate final again saw two teams who had already played each other in the group stages - Lady Boys from Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering against Mangham F.C. from AES Seal in Sheffield. Mangham F.C. had won the group match but in the final it was the Lady Boys who got their revenge with a 9-1 victory. Matt Meaney was the hero of the final with 5 goals, which meant he won the Plate Golden Boot with a tournament total of 17 goals.
