AFC No Game Tonight Win The Sheffield Thursday Night Championship Title – Autumn 2009
22 Jan 2010
Thursday 3rd December saw AFC No Game Tonight confirmed as The Sheffield Thursday Night Championship Winners and win promotion to the Premiership. They will be joined in the top flight by runners up Halfordians
AFC No Game Tonight capped a great first season in the league, with a 6-5 win over Passed It FC on the last night of the season, to secure the title and promotion to the Premiership. Led by captain Philip Naretti the team impressed all season long and are well deserved champions. The paring of hot shots Thomas England and Robert Winfindale, who weighed in with 24 and 18 goals respectively, was a big reason for the team’s success this season. However, it was an all round team effort that brought them the title, which also makes them tough opposition in the Premiership next season.

Halfordians snatched the runners up spot and final promotion spot in dramatic fashion. They were two points behind second placed Moose Hut going into the last night of the season, so were undoubtedly under dogs for promotion. However, a 7-2 win over FC Riverside and a slip up by Moose Hut in their match against Believe FC meant Halfordians leap frogged them into second. It was a fantastic achievement for the Halfordians team, who had finished third in the last two seasons. Led by captain Ian Wilmshurst, they made no mistakes this season, as they head to the big time for the first time in their history. It was bad luck for Moose Hut FC, but they can be pleased with their highest league placing to date and will start next season as one of the favourites for promotion.
The golden boot represented some consolation for Moose Hut, as star strikers Mathew Harris and Joe Beckett finished first and second respectively. Matthew Harris takes the trophy with a fantastic tally of 30 goals.

Matthew Harries - 30 goals!
The golden glove went to Halfordians, with just 26 goals conceded. This was an impressive 15 goals better than their nearest rival and only three short of the division record.
