Match Night news:

Sheffield - The Ladies 5 a side League Kicks Off!

10 Feb 2006

Last night (9th February) saw the start of the first season of The Sheffield Ladies 5 a side League. Seven teams from across the region will compete over the next 14 weeks to see who will be crowned ladies 5 a side league champions!

In the opening match, Inter Anything sent out a warning shot to the league with an impressive 8-0 victory over High 5’s.  Inter Anything captain Kate Burlaga hit four goals with Lindsey Gray netting two.  It puts Inter Anything top of the league and Kate Burlaga joint top of the golden boot table at this early stage of the season.  It was a tough start for High 5’s but as all teams know it’s not a sprint - it’s a marathon!

In the second match of the evening Goodwin Reds also fired eight goals in an 8-3 victory over Gems with Ruth Johnson scoring four goals and joining Kate Burlaga at the top of the golden boot table.  Gems’ team captain Eve Goodgrove fired in a hat trick but could not stop Goodwin Reds recording an impressive victory.

The final match of the night saw a close contest between Wildcats and The Clique and in an entertaining match it was Wildcats who came out on top with a 5-3 win, with Lisa Bailey - Wildcats captain - weighing in with a hat trick.  It was unlucky for The Clique but both sides look like they  will be real contenders for the championship!

Charlie’s Angels are the seventh team in the league and will start their campaign next week against Goodwin Reds.

As all teams know its early days and we wish all teams the best of luck for what promises to be an exciting first season of The Sheffield Ladies League!
