Phoenix Win The South Yorkshire Business Championship - Spring/Summer 2006!

Last night (18th July) saw Phoenix crowned as South Yorkshire Business Championship winners and gain promotion to the Premiership. They will be joined in the Premiership next season by league runners up St John’s.
In a dominant season long display Phoenix stormed to the title with an undefeated record of 13 wins and 1 draw - only dropping 2 points all season in a 2-2 draw with Fighting Cock. Lead by team captain Paul O’Shea who also fired in 27 goals en route to the title, Phoenix ended up winning the league by 15 clear points. This makes them well deserved winners and no doubt a force to be reckoned with in the Premiership next season!

The runners up spot went down to the last night of the season with NWT Freight and St John’s vying for the second promotion place. NWT went into the last night of the season one point clear of their rivals but faced league champions Phoenix in their last match knowing only a win would be good enough. In a tough battle NWT gave 100% against the undefeated champions only to narrowly lose 3-2. It meant they would have to rely on St John’s losing to gain promotion, but it was to prove heart break for NWT as St John’s held their nerve to win 8-1 over Westside Wanderers. It capped a fantastic first season for St John’s who will no doubt be looking forward to the Premiership challenge next season!

The race for the golden boot was all but settled before the last matches of the season with Langtree Group FC star striker Chris Scott finishing 10 goals clear of his nearest rival with a fantastic season total of 37 goals, making him well deserved winner of the golden boot.

The golden glove award capped a great night for Phoenix as their keeper, Mark Fielding, took the award with a record of only 27 goals conceded!
