Mixed Mayhem Win The Sheffield Netball Premiership Title – Autumn 2008

Wednesday 4th February saw Mixed Mayhem crowned The Sheffield Netball Premiership champions for the fifth time in the team’s history. The runners up spot went to last season’s champions Elite.
After last season’s rare disappointment of finishing second, Mixed Mayhem, led by captain Cath Askwith, made no mistake this season - clinching the title on the last night of the season with a 36-16 win over MBC. Their only slip up all season was an opening night loss to Elite, after which the team won thirteen games in a row to power to the Premiership title once again. Mixed Mayhem’s legendary record, which now stands at five Premiership titles in just seven seasons, is only matched by one other team in any Match Night League. An amazing performance by the team and with them looking stronger than ever, who would bet against a sixth title next season?

Last season’s champions Elite had to settle for runners up spot just four points off the pace. However, in a season in which the team struggled to get a settled full team out each week , it is a performance they can be proud of. Led by Katy Burnett, we are sure they will be challenging for the title once again next season. MBC finished in third, just one point ahead of Westways who are getting closer each season to breaking into the top three spots. The Toyoda Girls followed up last season’s promotion with an impressive first season back in the Premiership, which saw them pull away from relegation with a couple of weeks of the season to spare. Flying Foxes also promoted last season found the going tough and are relegated back to the Championship, along with Braunettes whose nine season stay in the Premiership is sadly at an end!

The player of the season award went right to the wire with three players entering the final night on six nominations. However, with no player picking up that decisive final nomination, the player of the season award is shared between star players Jo Willis (The Toyoda Girls), Gill Reid (Mixed Mayhem) and Charlotte Mancey, all of whom now have the right to boast to being the best player in The Sheffield Netball League!
