Match Night news:

Eckington Red Wings Win The Sheffield Netball League One Title– Autumn 2008

18 Feb 2009

Wednesday 28th January saw Eckington Red Wings crowned The Sheffield Netball League One champions and gain promotion to the Championship. Women With Balls took the runners up spot and final promotion place.

Eckington Red Wings, led by captain Amy Watson, put last season’s disappointment of finishing third behind them as they completed a near perfect season, with a final night 17-3 win over Sheffield YOS to confirm them as champions.  The team led the division from the very first match and only lost one match all season on their way to their first ever league honour.   It was a fantastic all round team effort from the team and  on their way to the title they set a new all time record for any division of just 63 goals conceded.  The team will feel they have nothing to fear next season as they look to make a big impact on the Championship!

Women With Balls bounced straight back to the Championship, at the first time of asking, after the disappointment of relegation last season.  The team, led by Sam Smith, pushed Eckington Red Wings right to the wire and were the only team to beat them all season.  In the end however, a 17-13 loss to the ever improving Charnock Chicks on the penultimate night of the season cost them dear and they had to settle for second place, just five points behind the champions.  The team can be proud of a great season which saw them finish some 15 clear points ahead of third placed Sheffield YOS, making them well deserved runners up.

The player of the season award went to Wake Smith Wonders’ star player, Jane Turner, with a fantastic record of seven nominations out of the fourteen games!  One ahead of Elizabeth Riley (Charnock Chicks), Rachel Taylor (Eckington Red Wings) and Kelly Wardle (Women With Balls).
