Wadsley Jack Win The Sheffield Netball Premiership Title – Summer 2010
22 Dec 2010
Wednesday 10th November saw Wadsley Jack crowned Sheffield Netball Premiership winners for the first time in their history. The runners up place went to Dynamix, with Champs finishing in third.
Wadsley Jack, led by captain Clare Higgins, stormed to the Premiership title and completed the season entirely unbeaten. In fact, the only points they dropped all season were against Dynamix, during a thrilling title deciding 18-18 draw on the penultimate night of the season. The title triumph was made even more remarkable by the fact this was Wadsley Jack’s first full season in the league. It was their strength in depth and all round team effort that were behind their title victory, highlighted by the fact that their player of the match awards were shared out between seven different players.
Wadsley Jack are well deserved winners, but Dynamix did push them right to the wire, only narrowly missing out on what would have been their seventh title. Dynamix should be pleased with another good season’s performance, but I’m sure they will be well aware they have not won the title for the last three seasons now. They will no doubt be looking to put that right next season! Elite, who were looking to make it three titles in a row, had a poor season by their standards and finished in fourth. A special mention this season has to go to the two newly promoted sides, Champs and The Shadows. The Premiership has been a graveyard of broken dreams for promoted sides over the years. However, this season, both sides put in some sensational performances and both deservedly retain their Premiership status – Champs doing it in style with an amazing third place finish. This is the first time in the history of the league that both promoted sides have avoided relegation. It was, however, not such good news for Toyoda Girls who, after five seasons in the top flight, have been relegated to the Championship along with High Green Ladies.
Dynamix - Premiership Runners Up
The player of the season award was some consolation for The Toyoda Girls, as star player Jo Willis won the award for the second time in her career, with a record of six nominations. In fact, along with team mate Rachel Hall, who has also won the award twice, Toyoda Girls have won the player of the season trophy four times out of the last five seasons. This is clearly a sign that they will back in the Premiership very soon!
