Match Night news:

Wickersley Win The Sheffield Netball Championship Title – Winter 2010/11

17 Jun 2011

Wednesday 27th April saw Wickersley clinch The Sheffield Netball Championship title and gain promotion to the Premiership. The runners up spot and final promotion place went to Irwin Mitchellettes.

In a surprise climax to the season, Wickersley leap frogged Irwin Mitchellettes on the final night to claim the title by just three points.  Irwin Mitchellettes had looked like champions for much of the season, but unfortunately they met an ever improving High Green Cyclones team that stunned them with a 24-17 win n their last match.  This meant all Wickersley had to do was avoid defeat against the pre season title favourites, The Toyoda Girls, to win the title.  Wickersley held their nerve in a hard fought match to claim victory 34-31 and take the title. This marks a return to the big time for Wickersley after a two season absence and  they will feel they are now better equipped to deal with the Premiership challenge.

Wickersley - Championship Winners

Irwin Mitchellettes will be disappointed to miss out on the title in such fashion.  However, nothing should take away from a fantastic season long display.  It was made even more remarkable as the team have now secured back to back promotions and head into the Premiership for the very first time in their history.  They even managed to notch up the Championship divisions biggest ever win, with a 49-1 demolition of Netbelles. Irwin Mitchellettes now hold both the League One and Championship biggest win records.  We are sure they are going to make a big impact in the Premiership next season.  A special mention also goes to The Toyoda Girls, who despite finishing in a disappointing fourth place, fired in a new division record of 393 goals this season - a great achievement from the team.

Irwin Mitchellettes - Premiership Bound

The player of the season award was shared by three players, namely Gemma Bray (Flying Foxes), Katie Liddell (Court Out) and Sarah Newbold (Flying Foxes).  Katie Liddell has now won the award twice in three seasons, which is a fantastic achievement.  It is also the first time two players from the same team have won the award and will be some consolation for Flying Foxes after their relegation to League One.

Katie Liddell - Championship Player of the Season

Congratulations to all teams who took part in a great season and best of luck in the new season.
